Twelve senior Turkish military officers, including 5 admirals and an army general, were charged and jailed Wednesday in connection with an alleged plot to overthrow the Turkish government.

The officers, including two active duty admirals, were among a group of 50 officers detained by police in a sweep Monday.

The operation included former chiefes of the Air Force, Navy and Special Forces, who were questioned regarding the alleged Sledgehammer plot to topple the Justice and Development party in 2003 in the highest profile crackdown ever carried out against the military.

An Istanbul court also freed six detainees on Wednesday but it was not clear whether they were freed pending trial.

Meanwile, prosecutors continued questioning dozens of high ranking officers over their suspected links to the Sledgehammer and Cages coup plots that allegedly included plans to blow up mosques during Friday prayers and bomb museums.

The military has denied the charges and has said the alleged plan was part of a scenario drawn up for a military training exercise.

The top military commander, General  Ilker Basbug,  is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Tayyip Erodgan and President Abdullah Gul at the presidential palace Thursday.

The arrests come amid news that Turkiye's stock index fell more than 3 percent Wednesday.

Economy Minister Ali Babacan attempted to ease concerns, saying the government was undergoing a "painful" transformation that would put the military under civilian rule.
