Turkiye's two day Abant Platform meeting has ended with a concensus that the government needs a strong ally in its democratization efforts.

The Abant Platform meets regularly to discuss some of the most vital issues facing Turkiye and the world, with the participation from individuals from every segment of society.

Turkish Interior Minister Besir Atalay complained during the meeting that organizations the government has approached as being a counterpart in the  government's democratization plan have not been cooperative.

Atalay said the government places special importance to having a legitimate party to talk to in Parliament, and stressed that the government is very hopeful for the normalization of Turkiye.

The first session of the discussions concentrated on the “structural requirements for democratization.”

Academic Tanel Demirel told attendees that democracy requires a culture and values that attach importance to freedoms and respecting the rights of others.

However, he also indicated that in non-democratic systems such a culture is not fully developed, including in Turkiye.

Demirel also stresses that democracies are fragile systems, and to say there will be no problems is naive.
