(Ebru News/Agency) Seven bodies have been recovered from the scene of two avalanches that buried eight snowmobilers in western Canada's backcountry.

The bodies were found late yesterday as searchers ploughed through avalanche debris near Fernie in British Columbia's Elk Valley, about 550 miles east of Vancouver.

Eleven snowmobilers were hit by back-to-back avalanches on Sunday.

Eight were buried but three from the group clawed through the snow and reached safety.

Corporal Chris Faulkner/Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP):
"They recovered three of the eight bodies that were missing, and since that time they've recovered another three. So there is a total of six bodies that have been recovered. They're still looking for two other missing snowmobilers."

Mourners gathered for a candlelight vigil in the victims' home town of Sparwood, not far from the scene of the avalanche.

Sparwood Mayor David Wilks urged mourners to come together in the months ahead as they cope with the tragedy.
