(Ebru News/AP) Georgian Prime Minister Vladimir Gurgenidze has called for urgent international action to calm the situation in Georgia's breakaway region of Abkhazia.

Speaking in Tbilisi on Monday, Gurgenidze said: "Unfortunately, in the past few days we have had further confirmation of Russia's illegal and provocative deployment of its forces and equipment on the Georgian territory of Abkhazia."

"This - we believe - is a deliberate escalation of tension between our two countries aimed at destabilising Georgia. I have said before, and I will repeat it again now, that Russia's actions constitute an aggression on Georgian territory.

Abkhazian officials on Monday were showing off what they said was wreckage of two unmanned Georgian spy planes that were downed over the weekend.

Georgia denies any of its planes were downed.

Russia supports Abkhazia and has quickly accused Tbilisi of inflaming tensions. Tbilisi, meanwhile, has accused Moscow of being provocative.

The back-and-forth has stoked fears that fighting could erupt involving Georgia, Abkhazia and the bolstered Russian peacekeeping force.
