As European Agriculture and Fisheries ministers meet in Luxembourg, farmers in one of the European Union's newest states say making a living off the land is not easy.

Many farmers have tiny plots of land and do not have enough money to buy modern farming equipment, barely surviving on subsistence farming.

Romanian farmers are set to get 699 million US dollars from the EU's farm budget for 2008 in direct payments.

Romania, a country of about 22 million, joined the European Union in 2007.
