Negative and Nasty Ads Rule Airwaves
Less than four months until the presidential election, and the airwaves have turned increasingly negative. Barack Obama and Mitt Romney are exchanging barbs, attacking each others' policies, past histories and track records.
David Redlawsk, a Political analyst at Rutgers University, says “Campaigns have been negative and nasty from the very beginning. Whether it's presidential or not is not the point. It's a zero sum game- if you don’t win , you lose. So you use every trick in the book.”
The Obama campaign is hammering away at Romney's record at Bain Capital, and his finances. This is fueled by Romney's refusal to release more tax returns.
“In order for Romney to be successful, he has to convince voters that he will steer the economy better than the President. The President's goal is to put that in question, in any way he can,”explains Redlawsk.
In some cities that ploy may actually be working
“Romney's favorabality ratings are dropping, and the attacks seem to be having some effect. Voters in general think he is not effective. But despite attacks, Obama's ratings have held- his voters seem faithful,” adds Redlawsk.
The Romney campaign has been fighting back in its ads. But some experts think, they may be missing the mark.
Redlawsk gathers, “The attacks directly on the president- saying he's lying, he needs to be more American. Those are tremendous mistakes. Attacking Obama as uamerican, will not work.”
If you live in Florida, Ohio, Colorado or Virginia, get ready for lively and likely negative political sparring in your state.
“ Let's keep in mind in 40 states there is no campaign, people already know the verdict. But in those 10 other states- it will be more intense.”
For now, you will get to know a lot more about the candidates. Not because they're talking about themselves- but their rivals are bad mouthing them.
