New Age of the US- Turkiye Partnership
Turkiye is a rising global power- it's a perfect confluence of Eastern and Western values. Now, global powers have begun to view this nation differently, with an intent on forging strong relationships. The US wants to engage with Turkiye- a country that has a robust economy ansd a secular outlook.
To further diplomatic relations between the nations, the Council on Foreign Relations released a new report titled 'US-Turkiye relations: A New Partnership'.
The CFR brought together some of the most experienced foreign relations experts-Madeleine Albright - Former US Secretary of State, Stephen Hadley - Senior Advisor for International Affairs, and Steven A. Cook - Council on Foreign Relations.
Steven Cook, praised Turkiye's 360 degree foreign policy - which is a welcome change from just a reactionary religious approach on issues. He lauded the country's secular outlook on global matters as well.
"One of the signature achievements of the Justice and Development party is creating an environment for Turks to explore their Muslim identity, Debates whether Turkiye leans to the West or East doesnt serve anyone's interest. It's beyond debate, " elaborates Cook.
Stephen Hadley emphasized the importance of the US- Turkiye partnership. Washington counts the rising power as one of its top allies- a sign of a transformed relationship.
Hadley emphasizes, "This is a different Turkiye. This is one of the 5-6 most important countries in the world. It has a very important, independent role to play in the Middle East and Central Asia. Turkiye can be a great ally and partner of ours. But that requires both nations to see the relationship differently. As equals, as working intensively at deep levels to develop strategies- develop trust, working together to solve common problems."
Former US Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright spoke of her experiences in Turkiye. " The only way I can put is, in the words of my grand daughter- We slept in Europe and we had lunch in Asia. I think that sums it up. "
She applauded the work of the ruling party- in reaching out to people across the country.
Albright desires a renewed and deeper relationship with Turkiye- to reach zones where Turkiye has been more influential than the US.
The discussion ended with the consensus that the growing diplomatic ties between Turkiye and the US will help Washington reach out to the Middle East- especially in the case of Syria and other troubled spots.
