Kenyan Prime Minister Odinga Talks Economy
On a recent visit to Istanbul, Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga explained the import of Turkish business relations in Kenya.
Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga : Turkey’s business men have been coming to Kenya and Kenyan business men have also becoming to Turkey. This has facilitated more trade. And Kenya is importing more from Turkey. We have what we call Vision 2030. Which aims to transform Kenya into a middle income economy.
Odinga also discussed his government’s plans to transform Kenya and said that he was excited about the recent oil discovery in Kenya’s remote northern Turkana region. Many experts have called the recent oil discovery in Kenya one of the most promising on the African continent.
Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga : … one of the most exciting finds on the continent.We don’t want to be too optimistic as Kenyans. And, we know, from the experience of other countries, that oil discovered can either be a blessing or a curse. We know that in some cases it has just been a curse. It has brought more suffering to the people than a blessing. In our case we want it to be blessing to the people of Kenya.
Odinga stated that he was cautious about what the oil would mean for Kenya’s future and urged Kenyan leaders to use their new resource with wisdom.
In closing, Prime Minister Odinga talked about his upcoming Kenyan Presidential bid in 2013. Odinga’s followers have a famous Kenyan political campaign song for Odinga. In the song they sing, “Agwambo” – which means leader – “you are unbwogable.”
“Unbwogable” explained Odinga means “fearless” in Kenyan slang. Odinga said he was honored to represent a team which was working to change Kenya.
Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga : “Unbwogable” is gonna mean that you cannot be scared. That you, you are not scared. Yes, we are not “bwogable.” So (laughter) we will be there. But it is not just me as an individual. It will be us. Because I represent a team.
