Major Gas Discovery in Mozambique; South Africa Calls for Caution against Foreign Interests
President Zuma addressing a business forum yesterday Wednesday urged Mozambique to protect their recent discovered gas from foreign interests.
"Let us ensure that we benefit from our minerals to ensure that they don't get shipped out of our countries,” stated President Zuma.
Mozambique President Armando Geubuza has called on South African companies to help in the recent major gas discovery in the country, “South African companies can help us in this gas discovery to ensure that we all have sustainable energy.”
South African President Jacob Zuma also urged Mozambique to fight underdevelopment and poverty and has called upon private sectors of both countries to join in the battle.
President Zuma is currently on a state visit to Mozambique.
President Zuma who spent many years in exile in Mozambique during the rule of the apartheid government advised Mozambique to fight poverty and underdevelopment with the same spirit they fought the apartheid government and colonialism.
Addressing the Parliament of Mozambique President Zuma said, "Today's fight is no longer about national liberation, which we obtained. Today's fight has assumed a different dimension. The fight is now against destitution, poverty, underdevelopment, with the ultimate aim to attain economic and developmental emancipation of all our peoples,” he continued, “This struggle is proving to be more difficult than we thought. It requires of us to work together in the same manner we did during the fight against colonialism and apartheid.”
President Zuma also thanked Mozambique for all the support they showed during the rule of the apartheid government, “The people of Mozambique faced hardships while supporting their South African brothers and sisters who were fighting the apartheid monster. They, however, soldiered on and the people of South Africa will never forget what this country sacrificed for South Africa to be free,” he said, “As South Africans we shall never tire to come here and say thank you, Mozambique."

President Zuma was also honoured with the ‘Freedom of the City of Maputo’ by his counterpart President Guebuza during the visit.
