Top US general in Afghanistan to discuss attacks

  • Mon Aug 20th 2012

A spokesman for international forces in Afghanistan says the U.S. military's top general is meeting with senior officials in Afghanistan today in an attempt to find a solution to the wave of attacks by Afghan soldiers and police against international forces.

Jamie Graybeal says Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, landed at Bagram Air Field outside of Kabul earlier Monday. Graybeal says Dempsey is meeting with Gen. John Allen, the commander of NATO and U.S. forces in the country, and senior Afghan officials.

He says Dempsey is expected to discuss progress with the campaign in Afghanistan and the recent insider attacks. In the latest such attack Sunday, two Afghan policemen turned their weapons on U.S. troops in Kandahar province, killing an American service member.
