Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Launched
The US has devised a way to let some illegal immigrants stay in the country.
The Department of Homeland Security will allow young illegal immigrants to apply for a program that will help them avoid deportation.
Among the conditions for the program, the immigrants should have entered the US before their 16th birthday.
They must also have continuous residence in the US for the last five years.
The program, known as the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, will also provide them with work permits.
Yet, this program is not free.
Each person applying will have to pay a $465 fee.
Documentation such as US school transcripts, medical and financial records will also have to be provided.
The government warned that the process wouldn't lead to citizenship. Neither does it give permission to travel internationally.
It began accepting immigrants' applications on Wednesday.
As many as 1.7 million people are eligible for this program.
