Muslims Worldwide Celebrate Eid al-Fitr

  • Mon Aug 20th 2012

Muslims around the world are celebrating Eid, the traditional end of Ramadan.

The holiday marks the end of fasting during the holy month.

Eid is an Arabic word meaning "festivity", though many muslims celebrate the holiday by sharing their common goal of unity.

Millions of Turkish people prayed those who are under cruelty and hard conditions and prayed for all of mankind.

In China, nearly 200-thousand Muslims gathered in a mosque today for a ceremony marking the end of Ramadan.

And thousands of Egyptians gathered in Cairo after sunrise prayers at mosques and in the streets.

It's the first Eid since the Muslim Brotherhood won both parliamentary and presidential elections in Egypt.

One man taking part in the prayers in Cairo said he hoped that similar developments will take place in Syria, where violence between regime loyalists and rebels is continuing.

Muslims gathered in Sydney during the Eid festivities to demonstrate their sadness at the continuing violence in Syria.

A PROTESTOR said:"I think it was very beautiful to see the community come together for a common cause and to remember their brothers and sisters and their families across the globe in Syria and also celebrate the Eid but also remember that there are people that are suffering under a terrible regime at the moment and are able to come together in solidarity with them. So it was beautiful."

Prominent Turkish Islamic Scholar - Fethullah Gulen, also celebrated the occasion with friends in the U.S.

Being far away from Turkiye, his friends who are living close by, did not forget him during the Eid.

Gulen gave gifts to the children which put a big smile on their faces.

Gulen is known as one of the most important figures of today's Islamic world and one of the most significant advocates of dialogue for peace and understanding among different faiths.
